Why Charter a Yacht in Florida?

Florida has some fantastic spots to explore by yacht—think Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. But let’s be honest: if you’re dreaming of a week-long adventure, the real magic lies just beyond Florida’s coastline in the Bahamas.

Florida is the perfect jumping-off point for a yacht charter. Many luxury yachts are based in South Florida, making it easy to start your trip in Miami or Fort Lauderdale and head straight for the Bahamas. It’s a short cruise to one of the most stunning destinations in the world—but let’s not skip over what Florida has to offer first.

But let’s not skip over what Florida has to offer first:

  • Miami Beach: For a mix of energy and elegance, start at Miami Beach. Stroll down Ocean Drive for iconic Art Deco architecture, grab a meal at Joe’s Stone Crab (a local institution), or take in the skyline from South Pointe Park. By night, hit rooftop bars like Juvia for incredible views and cocktails.
  • Fort Lauderdale: Nicknamed the “Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale is all about its canals. Take a slow cruise past luxury waterfront homes, then dock near Las Olas Boulevard for boutique shopping and standout dining at places like Boatyard. Don’t miss the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens for a touch of history and nature.
  • Boca Raton: Looking for a quieter vibe? Boca offers uncrowded beaches and a relaxed pace. Stop by Mizner Park for upscale shopping and dining, or visit Gumbo Limbo Nature Center to see sea turtles up close.
  • Palm Beach: Palm Beach exudes refinement. Tour the historic Flagler Museum, shop on Worth Avenue, or dock for dinner at Renato’s. It’s a perfect stop for those who enjoy high-end everything.
  • Key Biscayne: Just south of Miami, Key Biscayne offers natural beauty and tranquility. Snorkel at the underwater wrecks near Biscayne National Park or enjoy fresh seafood at the waterfront eatery, Boater’s Grill. Crandon Park Beach is great for families, with calm waters and picnic spots.

While these places are great for day trips or quick getaways, Florida’s cruising options are a bit limited for longer-term charters. That’s where the Bahamas comes in.

The Bahamas: A Short Sail to Paradise

Just a short trip from Florida, the Bahamas is a dream for yacht charters. With hundreds of islands, secret coves, and pristine waters, it’s as if it was made for exploring by yacht. While sailing catamarans and monohulls are available, power catamarans and high-speed motor yachts are especially popular here since they make it easy to hop between islands like the Exumas or the Abacos.

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Travel Costs: If your yacht starts in Florida but you’re heading to the Bahamas, there may be relocation fees for shorter charters. Week-long bookings usually avoid these fees.
  • Taxes and VAT: In the Bahamas, there’s a 4% VAT and a 10% tax on the charter fee and APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance). While it adds to the cost, the experience is well worth it.

When is the Yacht Charter Season in Florida?

Florida’s subtropical climate makes it a great destination for yacht charters year-round, but the main season runs from December to the end of May, with a peak in December for Christmas and New Year. Here’s a breakdown to help you plan:

  • December to April: These months offer warm temperatures and low humidity, perfect for comfortable cruising.
  • March to May: The weather starts to warm up even more, with occasional tropical showers—a great time for those who enjoy sunny days and refreshing rain.
  • June through November: Keep in mind, this is hurricane season, so while charters are still possible, it’s good to plan ahead and be flexible.

“Chris was so understanding and accommodating. He went above and beyond to ensure that we had the most wonderful vacation. He communicated often and reassured us through the entire booking and planning process. When the original boat we booked fell through, he found an even better option for us. It was the trip of a lifetime!”

“Marcelle was very helpful and polite in finding us the perfect boat for our family. Wiring money anywhere nowadays is always a risk when you are not familiar with the company and its staff.
The boat was new and the captain chef and crew could not have been better. Very professional yet super friendly and a delight to have on board. Food was delicious and plentiful, could not have been better.”

“Our family has made 2 charters in Greece with Nadja & David. They are so easy to work with, attentive to every detail and resolve any issues quickly and fairly. Both our experiences were excellent! The yachts were great, the crews were amazing and we will definitely plan our next charter with them again!”
